Club History

Club History

The New Jersey Stallions were established in 1992 and grew out of the Clifton Stallions youth soccer program, which had been in existence since the mid-70’s.  As more and more young players expressed a desire to extend their association with the club after they finished grade school, it became necessary to introduce a senior team and eventually a full professional team.  In time, the Clifton Stallions and New Jersey Stallions developed into two independent organizations.

The New Jersey Stallions Professional Soccer Club joined the USL system in 1996 when owner Nino Lupi wanted to keep the league’s presence in the nation’s largest market following the merger of the New York Fever and New York Centaurs of the A-League.   At that time, the Stallions had been a longtime member of the area’s Northeast Super Soccer League.  The Stallions competed in the USL until they played their final season in 2004, but not until fielding both Men’s and Women’s squads and achieving success in the form of a Men’s Northern Division Championship in 2000, Men’s US Open Cup qualification for 4 years straight between 1999 and 2002, as well as a Women’s W-League Northeast Division Championship in 2003.

Throughout their professional participation in the USL, the Stallions maintained a mission of developing the future of youth soccer in America by offering programs employing positive coaching techniques, which allowed students to come away with increased self-confidence both on and off the field.  Stallions professional players were on-hand during youth camps and nearly every professional match, both Men’s and Women’s, included youth matches during half-time showcasing the talent of the next generation of players.

The Stallions continue their successful association with the USL through fielding teams in the Super-Y League; a professionalized system designed as a first step for developing elite youth soccer players in North America.

In December of 2002, the New Jersey Stallions returned to their roots in Clifton when they established the Stallions Arena on Penobscot Street.  Stallions Arena continues to successfully operate today and boasts a state of the art synthetic playing surface and an open playing area to accurately reproduce an authentic and natural playing experience.

In April of 2010, the New Jersey Stallions expanded their mission of youth soccer development by forming the Stallions Academy – an elite youth soccer club dedicated to the development of players to their greatest potential with a focus on top-quality instruction and exposure to the highest level of competition.  The NJ Stallions Academy offers programs which employ positive coaching techniques, and allow students to come away with increased self-confidence both on and off the field.  The Stallions Academy program is available to Boys and Girls between the range of U11 and U18.  Stallions Academy teams compete in the USL Super-Y league as well as local competitive leagues.

In December of 2012, NJ Stallions Academy and NJSA 04 (now aka Cedar Stars Academy) entered into an official affiliation whereby the two organizations worked together to elevate the level of boys soccer by providing an outlet for the then USSF Preacademy training and league play, in addition to linking the two clubs to provide USSF Development Academy opportunities to players in both organizations; the top scouted and selected players earned opportunities to graduate into the full USSF Development Academy.  At the time, this development further solidified NJ Stallions as the premier club program in Northern New Jersey.

Over the past ten years, NJ Stallions continues to maintain its status as one of the top development academies in New Jersey, continuing its presence competing in the USYS National League platform that begins with the EDP Futures program at the youngest ages, and progressing into the older ages into the RAL or Regional Academy League, followed by the top tier teams entering the Prem I and II USYS National League tier that competes for the USYS National Championships every year.
